They'll Get Better Eventually

Thus far, it seems as if one team is showing up ready to play in these bowl games, while the other team must have had too much to eat at the team banquet the night before (or, too much partying on Bourbon Street, for all you Ohio fans). To kick off the bowl season this past Saturday, we were treated to three blowouts. Although I'm not overly surprised (in years past, there have been numerous early bowl blowouts), I hope that the games are more exciting before we hit Christmas.

Although the games haven't been much to watch, I am proud to say that I haven't completely fallen behind in my College Bowl Mania group after the first weekend. One thing that I did notice about this year's version of the game is that they do not include people's overall record in picking the games, nor do they show how many possible points you can end up with. That's a little disappointing, but I guess they are pulling out all the stops to get people to actually watch the GoDaddy.com Bowl.

For the next few days, only one bowl game per night will be played. Here is my pick for the December 22nd bowl game.

Beef O' Brady's St. Petersburg Bowl
Southern Mississippi vs. Louisville

This bowl game, like many of the other early season bowl matchups, is a toss-up. Louisville is likely ecstatic to even be playing in a bowl game, after being picked by some (this author included) to finish last in the Big East. Their reward? A trip to St. Petersburg, where they get to play one of the more underrated programs in Southern Mississippi.

Southern Miss is no stranger to postseason play. This is their ninth straight season playing in a bowl game, and their seventeenth consecutive winning season. In order to get back on the winning side in bowl games, they're going to need to pound the ball against Louisville. The Cardinals have one of the better defenses in the Big East, but have a problem stopping the run. If Southern Miss can establish the running game, it may be a long night for Louisville.

Like Southern Miss, Louisville will want look to get the running game going early. Running back Bilal Powell is one of the better runners in college football, and will look to make the most of his first action in postseason play. However, it will be a tough task for Powell; Southern Miss is no slouch on defense, and their run defense is the unit's strength.

I have learned from past experience that it is wise to take the team from the stronger conference in games like these. However, I think that Southern Miss has the defense capable of containing Powell, and will have their way with Louisville's defense on the other side of the ball. Additionally, it is arguable whether the Big East is really that much stronger than C-USA anyway. At any rate, I'm confident that this game will be better than the first three. I have Southern Miss for 11 points in the College Bowl Mania game.

Final Score: 27-21 Southern Miss

It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

Around this time last year (actually, 359 days ago to be exact) was when I actually started posting frequently on this blog. Now after almost a year of speculating on different stories, analyzing teams and games, and writing for a loyal following of four, we are back to the time of year that I enjoy most. Bowl season really is one of my favorite times of year (other than the first weekend of March Madness). Many of you may not be interested in the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl the day after Christmas, but I am. Maybe it's because I am a true fan of the game; honestly though, I think it may be a combination of that and the fact that it gives me a valid reason to stay home and not shower or change my clothes from the day before.

You may be thinking "why do you honestly care about a game that is sponsored by the San Diego County Credit Union?" If you are honestly asking this question, please close your browser and never come back to this site.

Now, for those of you that play ESPN's College Bowl Mania, and thus understand the importance of the three bowl games being played tomorrow, here are my picks for those games. Seriously though; if you are one of those people who think the question I posed in the last paragraph is actually legitimate, you don't have any business being here. At least, you don't until around January 1st.

New Mexico Bowl
BYU vs. UTEP

Since this is the first game of the bowl season, I don't have much but the stats to go off of when analyzing this one. UTEP stumbled in the second half of the season, primarily because quarterback Trevor Vittatoe was injured. Granted, four of their five losses during that half of the season came on the road. However, BYU's story is almost the exact opposite; they have won four of their last five, and only lost by a point to Utah in their season finale. Since Vittatoe still isn't one-hundred percent, I have to go with the Cougars in this one. I have BYU for 15 points in College Bowl Mania game.

Final Score: 30-24 BYU

uDrove Humanitarian Bowl
Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State

Like many games early on in the bowl season, this matchup is pretty much a toss-up. I would have liked Northern Illinois in this game. That was before they lost to the "other" Miami in the MAC Championship game, and then learned that their head coach, Jerry Kill, would not be coaching them in their bowl game after accepting the position of Minnesota's head coach. All this, combined with the fact that Fresno State has to have a little bit of an advantage on that crazy blue turf in Boise (they play there every other year in the regular season), makes me slightly more confident in the Bulldogs in this one. I have Fresno State here, but only for 8 points.

Final Score: 48-45 Fresno State

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl
Ohio vs. Troy

At least thus far, I'm not being very kind to the MAC. While Ohio is probably superior to Troy in every way but their nickname, going to New Orleans is a treat for the Bobcats. For the men of Troy, who have previously been to this bowl in 2006 and 2008, it is more of a business trip. In the early bowl matchups, it seems that a good offense will trump a good defense (which totally goes against my usual saying, but whatever). So the question will be, do you like Troy's offense (best in the Sun Belt), or Ohio's defense (total yards per game given up is fourth best in the MAC)? I know that the MAC is known for their stellar defensive performances week in and week out, but I'm going to have to go with the offense here. I have Troy for 5 points.

Final Score: 38-34 Troy

In the spirit of early season bowl matchups that would mean nothing without the College Bowl Mania game, I will leave you with this video. Doesn't it sound a lot like Frankie from those old Budweiser commercials? Ah...classic.

I Love It, Brother

I think that it took most of the sports world by storm when Cliff Lee agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies over the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. New York and Texas were widely thought to be the only two major players in the battle for Lee before last night. As a supporter of the "Anyone But The Yankees" cause, this is good news, in a sense. However, Philadelphia now has the best starting pitching core in the majors since Atlanta's trio of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz over a decade ago. Quite honestly, it may be one of the best pitching rotations in the past few decades. Obviously, that claim is up for debate, but let's take a look at the potential starting rotation for the Phillies next year. Of the five starters (Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels, and Joe Blanton), two (Halladay and Lee) are Cy Young winners. A third (Oswalt) has been a Cy Young finalist multiple times. Hamels was the 2008 World Series MVP, and not too long ago was the club's ace. Blanton, while having the least credentials in the group, still posted a 9-6 overall record last season.

The only way I can see Philadelphia not winning the National League is if they have the offensive firepower of a local coach pitch team. Yes, the Phils were sub-par offensively last season, and the departure of Jason Werth does not help matters. However, we saw what happened with San Francisco this past fall; it was almost impossible to earn runs on their spectacular starting rotation. San Francisco's offense only had to squeeze out a few runs a game, and the superior pitching more often than not preserved the small leads. The young core that San Francisco had doesn't even compare to what Philadelphia has now. Four elite pitchers, all in their prime. Unless injuries become an issue, someone better send a memo to all the National League General Managers: You better watch out for the "Philly Phour".

Does anyone else feel even a little bit bad for Brett Favre? Sure, for three years the Favre Chronicles has been a soap-opera worthy of a mid-afternoon TV slot, but it was really kind of sad to see Favre's Iron Man streak come to an end under the circumstances that it did. Not only was the game played in Detroit, where the number of Minnesota fans is about the same as that of residents of the city that still have a job, but to add insult to injury (no pun intended), Favre got to watch his team get crushed. You know it has to be painful to sit on the sidelines (again, no pun intended) as you watch your replacement trip his own running back on a simple handoff. No matter what you think of Favre's antics, you have to admire his desire to play the game. On Yahoo! Sports, Favre is listed as questionable for this weekend's game against Chicago, with chest, ankle, and right shoulder injuries. The man is practically falling apart, yet still will not admit defeat. However, due to many people's perception of him, his greatest assets may always be at least partly overshadowed by his recent behavior. It's unfortunate that Favre's career looks as if it will end more like the final scene of The Hulk, rather than a hero of the game riding off into the sunset as it should.

You heard it here first; in three years, the Miami Hurricanes will make the rivalry with the Florida Gators relevant again. I believe that the Hurricanes made a great move by making Al Golden their new head coach, and I think that Florida fans may be missing Urban Meyer sooner than they think, as the university signed current Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp to be their head coach starting next season. Golden completely turned around a Temple team that hadn't been to a bowl game since 1979 before going to the Eagle Bank Bowl last year. Like Muschamp, Golden is a former defensive coordinator, but has experience running the entire show, and was one of the most sought after young coaches in the game dating back to last year. I think that Golden is much like Meyer, in that he shows the ability to improve a team wherever he goes. Muschamp, while being an extremely talented defensive coordinator, announced that he will institute a pro-style offense at Florida. It is very difficult to successfully run a pro-style offense, and as a defensive coordinator with no prior head coaching experience, will likely be even more difficult for Muschamp. Also, Florida fans can complain about the spread, but one of the reasons Meyer implemented that style of offense is because, as of late, Florida has not been able to recruit the players to run the pro-style. I think we will find that Golden is a true head coach, while Muschamp is just a very talented defensive coordinator. While neither team may be an elite college football power for awhile, I think that Miami will rise and Florida will continue to fall, making this a much more balanced rivalry as long as both of these men are at the helm.

NCAAF Week 3 Weekend Preview

They called last weekend Monster Saturday in reference to the number of big matchups being played around the country. Although no one has coined a name for this weekend, there are a lot of interesting games this weekend as well. Here is a list of my top five games to pay attention to this weekend, as well as some storylines that I'd like to address.

Top 5 Games to Pay Attention to This Weekend

#12 Arkansas at Georgia (Saturday, 12 PM ET)

Georgia has never started 0-2 in the SEC under Mark Richt, but they have a tough test this weekend if they want to keep it that way. I put Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett on my preseason Heisman watch for a reason; he has the ability to pick defenses apart, even in the most hostile atmosphere. Georgia has had trouble scoring the ball this season, putting just six points on the board in a loss to South Carolina last weekend, which is not a recipe for success against a Razorbacks team known for their offensive firepower. The Bulldogs are missing wideout A.J. Green more and more every week.

My Pick: 31-17 Arkansas

#10 Florida at Tennessee (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)

This is the most interesting matchup this weekend in my opinion. Tennessee looked good against Oregon last weekend for about a quarter and a half, and then went totally flat on offense for the rest of the game. Florida has not been overly impressive on offense this season either, so barring some sort of career day by John Brantley, Tennessee will probably not give up forty-five unanswered to the Gators like they did against Oregon. Florida is 5-0 against the Vols under Urban Meyer, but those wins were during the Chris Leak and Tim Tebow eras. Add the fact that Florida may be a little overrated, and that the game is being played in Knoxville, and we may be looking at the first Top 10 upset of the season.

My Pick: 27-24 Tennessee

Clemson at #16 Auburn (Saturday, 7 PM ET)

The ACC looked awful as a whole last weekend, so this is a game where they can attempt to regain some of the respect they lost. Clemson may be the class of the ACC, but then again, they may not be. Regardless, I think that Auburn is a little bit overrated, much like their SEC counterpart Florida. Cameron Newton is kind of like a poor man's Terrelle Pryor, but unlike Pryor, Newton routinely has to rely entirely on himself to make plays. Auburn will need to be more unpredictable against Clemson if they want to win this game, because Clemson has the playmakers on defense to contain Newton.

My Pick: 34-27 Clemson

#6 Texas at Texas Tech (Saturday, 8 PM ET)

Last time this game was played in Lubbock, Michael Crabtree was able to score a late touchdown to lead the Red Raiders over the Longhorns, which proved to be the only loss Texas would suffer that year. Crabtree is no longer there to help the Red Raiders out, and as usual, Texas Tech has a questionable defense. Currently, Texas Tech averages 43.5 PPG on offense, and they're definitely going to need to score a lot tomorrow night if they want to beat the Longhorns. Even then, it may not be enough. Texas has had some trouble offensively early on in games this year, so Texas Tech will need to hope that happens and take advantage of it. As for the Longhorns, playing catch up against a team like Texas Tech, who can score at will, is not recommended.

My Pick: 41-31 Texas

#9 Iowa at #24 Arizona (Saturday, 10:30 PM ET)

This is the only game this weekend featuring two ranked teams, so naturally it is one to watch. Iowa has cruised in their first two games, but their first real test will be against the Wildcats, who will test a Hawkeye defense that gives up a Big Ten best 216 yards per game. The Wildcats will need a balanced offensive attack, and cannot rely on Nick Foles to carry to offense. Arizona will need to find a way to contain Iowa's defensive line, or this game could have an end result similar to the 2009 Holiday Bowl, which the Wildcats lost 33-0 to Nebraska.

My Pick: 28-13 Iowa

5 More to Flip To

California at Nevada (Tonight, 10 PM ET)

Cal's defense should be too much for Nevada. Should...

Georgia Tech at North Carolina (Saturday, 12 PM ET)

Both teams are in dire need of this win, if only to instill some confidence, which both have lost a lot of.

East Carolina at Virginia Tech (Saturday, 1:30 PM ET)

Who would have guessed that the Hokies could start the season 0-3?

Air Force at #7 Oklahoma (Saturday, 3:30 PM ET)

The Falcons are probably a little too undersized to beat the Sooners, but they looked really good in a win over BYU. This one could be interesting.

Notre Dame at Michigan State (Saturday, 8 PM ET)

Notre Dame has had trouble in East Lansing as of late. Could the Irish go 0-2 against Michigan teams yet again?

Storylines for the Weekend

Georgia's Mark Richt is NOT on the hot seat

I was listening to the Paul Finebaum Radio Network yesterday, and a lot of people were calling in speculating on whether or not Georgia head coach Mark Richt is on the hot seat if he loses to Arkansas this weekend. The answer, quite simply, is no. The Bulldogs have a redshirt freshman starting at quarterback, and are without their star wideout until the fifth game. Once A.J. Green returns and Aaron Murray gets some game experience under his belt, the Bulldogs will turn it around, and probably finish the season on a high note. There are clear reasons why the Bulldogs offense has been bad so far, and Richt isn't one of them.

Don't Stop Living In The Red

You think Boise State's field is bad? If you do, you're really going to get a kick out of this. There's no editing or Photoshop work there. No, that's actually the University of Eastern Washington's field, which will be played on for the first time this weekend. I like Boise's field, but I think that the red could quickly become an eyesore. Also, you won't be able to make the joke that birds dive into it thinking it is water like you can with Boise's field. I wouldn't expect any big name programs to try this any time soon.

Time for the Pac-10 to make a statement

Last weekend, the ACC made a statement, but in a bad way. The Pac-10 has a chance to look really good on the national stage. As far as underdogs are concerned, Arizona is at home against Iowa, Washington is at home against Nebraska, and UCLA is at home against Houston. These are all games that the Pac-10 can realistically win and use as ammunition against critics who believe that the conference is weak. If the Pac-10 doesn't want to become an afterthought as the ACC may have become after last weekend, then they need a big weekend from not only the top of their conference, but from the middle as well.

The Big One

After two and a half weeks of bowl games, we have finally come down to the season finale. It's a bittersweet day for me; I love the college bowl season, and seeing it come to an end is always a little depressing.

I won't forget to mention last night's game. It ended up being very entertaining. Not only was it a shootout, but it took a comeback in the 4th quarter and two overtimes to decide it. Central Michigan ended up winning, and not only did it cap off a great college career for Dan LeFevour, but it also sealed my win in my College Bowl Mania group. Needless to say, I was pretty happy with the Chippewas last night.

Now, without further ado, my pick for tonight's game.

BCS National Championship presented by Citi
Alabama vs. Texas

This is the game everyone has been waiting for. Both teams feature extremely talented defenses, with many future NFL stars for each team. Texas has the best rush defense in the nation, and Alabama gives up just 11 PPG and 242 total yards. This will probably come down to the quarterbacks. Whoever can avoid the pass rush better and find open receivers will have the advantage in this game. I think that Alabama QB Greg McElroy will be the difference in a very tight game, but don't count out Colt McCoy and the Longhorns. If Texas can shut down McElroy and limit the big plays by Mark Ingram, they can win. Last time Texas played in Pasadena, they were the underdogs. We will likely see some magic from one of these quarterbacks tonight, just as we did back in 2005.

Final Score: 27-24 Alabama

I have Alabama for 15 points in the College Bowl Mania game, but it no longer matters. I will be watching this one purely for the love of the game. It's been a great season; hopefully, we can cap it off with a great National Championship.

The Straggler

Tonight's bowl game is like the fat kid who's at the back of the pack when the class is running the mile in PE. The last non-BCS game was four days ago; why this bowl (which is being sponsored by GMAC- good move sponsoring this bowl, guys) is being played so late, I do not know.

Last night's game got more attention than I had figured. Iowa's win gave the Big 10 its fourth of the bowl season, and here's the stat for the night: the Big 10 won four bowl games, all against teams in the Top 15. Guess who the last conference to do that was. The SEC? Pac-10? Try the Big 10, in 1998. Maybe the media will finally lay off this conference.

Tonight is the teaser for the national championship. I actually have a little bit of interest because if Central Michigan wins, then I lock up the win in my College Bowl Mania group. Also, a girl I know from school is going there next year, so I told her I'd root for them.

GMAC Bowl
Central Michigan vs. Troy

Central Michigan should dominate this game. They have the best team offense and defense in the MAC, and Chippewas QB Dan LeFevour can score with both his feet and his arm. The kid has 41 touchdowns this season (27 passing and 14 rushing), and is the NCAA leader in career touchdowns (sure, the record is broken just about every year now, but that's not the point). However, don't write off Troy completely. Florida Atlantic was able to beat Central Michigan in their bowl game last year when they were huge underdogs. If Troy can make this a low scoring game, then they have a chance. I have Central Michigan for 31 points in the College Bowl Mania game, so I'm pretty confident in the Chippewas.

Final Score: 38-27 Central Michigan

What A Game!

I've read some articles that suggest that last night's Fiesta Bowl was a boring game, in which neither team really played that well. Well, I'm sorry that a 17-10 game that came down to TCU's final possession wasn't good enough for those writers. I still think that people will look back on this game and remember it as the most interesting game of the 2010 BCS bowls.

During the trophy presentation, Boise State TE Kyle Efaw (the man who caught the pass on the fake punt) was asked if he believes his team is the number one team in the nation. He laughed, and responded, "Probably not". Kyle, you probably know your team better than I, but I'm not taking back what I said yesterday: Boise deserves a share of the crystal ball.

Tonight's game isn't as anticipated as the Fiesta Bowl was. Quite honestly, I think the powers that be are going to be kicking themselves for scheduling these games so late. The holidays are over, folks. I've been in school for two days now, and although I'm possibly the biggest bowl game junkie I know, I'm truly not that interested. What they don't seem to realize is that the casual fan (that is, anyone who isn't a GT or Iowa alum) isn't really interested in the bowl game, as much as they are interested in going over to someone's house and watching the game over the holidays. Unfortunately, it isn't the holidays anymore and most people aren't willing to do that on a Tuesday night.

Regardless of my thoughts, here is my pick for today's game.

FedEx Orange Bowl
Georgia Tech vs. Iowa

I have said before that I am a fan of the triple option, and tonight we get to see it again. Paul Johnson, who coached Navy (who also uses the triple option) before accepting the Georgia Tech job, has done a wonderful job of instituting that offense at multiple schools. Georgia Tech will likely look to go on long, offensive drives and try to wear down the Hawkeye defense. Georgia Tech has the ability to score lots of points (35.3 PPG, 1st in the ACC), but I believe the score will stay low in this one. If Kirk Ferentz was able to prepare Iowa for defending the triple option after their 45 day layoff, then this game should be close. However, I see Georgia Tech being able to score just enough to win this one.

Final Score: 24-14 Georgia Tech

I have 12 points on Tech in the College Bowl Mania game, but I'm not really paying attention to that as closely. After last night's game, I pretty much sealed the deal, and will probably walk away as my group champion. I'll let you guys know how it turns out at the end.

The Separate But Equal Bowl

Yep. That's right. That's exactly what this game is. Look at the records: 13-0 vs. 12-0. Bitterness aside, a great game in tonight's Fiesta Bowl is just what playoff protesters want. If the only game featuring two "mid-major" football programs turns out being the best BCS game this year, then the questions about fairness in the system will reach new heights.

I'm a little sad that the bowl season is coming to an end. After tonight, there will only be three bowl games left. Here is my pick for tonight's game.

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl
Boise State vs. Texas Christian

Everyone remembers the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. It is hands down the best football game that I have ever witnessed. Boise State remembers that game too, and they are familiar with being the underdogs in a big game. TCU is one of two teams in the nation (the other being a certain burnt orange team also from Texas) to have a Top 10 total team offense and defense. The Horned Frogs, led by DE Jerry Hughes, will look to pressure Boise QB Kellen Moore into making bad decisions. Boise probably won't resort to trickery as they did in 2007, but they will still need to play almost a flawless game to beat TCU.

If this rematch of last year's Poinsettia Bowl is as entertaining as it was last year, then we are in for a treat. Due to the fact that I'm a fan of Boise State, I'm going out on a limb and calling the upset (I only have them for 1 point in the College Bowl Mania game, though). However, as a supporter of a college football playoff, I wouldn't be totally disappointed seeing TCU win a close one. A win by the Horned Frogs will definitely stir controversy and raise the question about who is the real national champion come Friday.

Final Score: 30-28 Boise State

Do I think that whoever wins this game deserves a share of the National Championship? Absolutely. Undefeated is undefeated, and until someone beats you on the field, you have every right to call yourself the best.

What's The Logic In This?

Today, we have five bowl games, none of which are BCS games. What exactly were the bowl executives thinking when the scheduled the Papajohns.com bowl the day after New Years? Here's a rule of thumb; if you're playing your bowl game after January 1st and it isn't being played somewhere in Florida, then you're probably hurting for money. These games may be on TV, but I don't expect a whole lot of people to watch them.

Yesterday was a good day for me. I went 4-1, with my only loss being the West Virginia vs. FSU game, which I can't be too sad about. Good for Bobby; he gets to go out on a high note.

Today's games could make everyone trying to pick the winners cringe. None of these games feature really big name programs, so picking teams you don't really know that much about is pretty much a crapshoot. Regardless, I now have a chance to win my group in the College Bowl Mania game, as I sit in 3rd place with a 15-10 record.

Here are my picks for the January 2nd bowl games.

International Bowl
South Florida vs. Northern Illinois

South Florida has been one of those teams that have impressed me ever since they started upsetting top ranked programs back in 2007. Bulls coach Jim Leavitt knows how to get his program ready for a bowl game, so I don't think Northern Illinois will surprise his team early. I have 29 points on USF in the College Bowl Mania game.

Final Score: 38-28 South Florida

Papajohns.com Bowl
South Carolina vs. Connecticut

In possibly my favorite bowl name of the year (I didn't know it was smart for a pizza company to promote their website; then again, this is the electronic age), I will actually be interested in this game. I think that UConn will come out with a lot of emotion, trying to win this game for their slain teammate Jasper Howard. South Carolina is probably the better football team in this game, but how much you want it has a lot to do with who brings home the hardware in bowl games. I have 4 points on UConn in the College Bowl Mania game.

Final Score: 31-30 UConn

AT&T Cotton Bowl
Oklahoma State vs. Mississippi

Many people used to love watching this game on New Year's Day. Now, this bowl apparently thinks they're too good to be played on the 1st, and they decided that it would be better to play in the "House that Jerry built" instead of letting the traditionally cold Dallas weather make an impact on the game. I have Oklahoma State for 8 points in the College Bowl Mania game, because I think they can score just enough against Houston Nutt's defense.

Final Score: 24-17 Oklahoma State

AutoZone Liberty Bowl
Arkansas vs. East Carolina

Think Michigan misses Ryan Mallett? Arkansas' QB has a cannon for an arm, and is probably laughing at the Wolverines right now. Unlike fellow gunslinger Case Keenum, Mallett won't throw six interceptions in his bowl game. Instead, he'll pick apart the East Carolina secondary on his way to a win. East Carolina is not a pushover, but the Arkansas passing attack has given defenses like LSU's trouble. I have the Razorbacks for 14 points in the College Bowl Mania game.

Final Score: 34-17 Arkansas

Valero Alamo Bowl
Michigan State vs. Texas Tech

I've heard that they're putting security guards around all the electrical closets in the dome, so Adam James, you don't have to worry. In the beginning, the announcers will probably focus on the Mike Leach situation. However, let's not forget that Texas Tech is a pretty good football team. Both teams love to pass the ball, but Texas Tech can pass it better. This game should be a shootout, which will be fun to watch. I believe that if the Red Raiders are focused on the game and not on the coaching situation, then they will win this game. I have Texas Tech for 7 points in the College Bowl Mania game.

Final Score: 45-38 Texas Tech

Happy New Year!

Yesterday I went a respectable 3-2 picking the bowl games. I was very surprised and impressed with the two service academies, not because they won, but because they easily won.

Today, due to the fact that I pulled an all-nighter and don't have the patience to write a long post, I will be giving a very brief rundown of the bowl games for today. Here are my picks for the first bowl games of the year.

Outback Bowl
Auburn vs. Northwestern

Northwestern has looked rather impressive this year, knocking off Iowa and a good Wisconsin team. However, after what Auburn was able to do against Alabama, I can't pick against them.

Final Score: 35-20 Auburn

Konica Minolta Gator Bowl
West Virginia vs. Florida State

FSU coach Bobby Bowden will look to ride off into the sunset with a win. However, facing a tough West Virginia team featuring impact running back Noel Devine, I just don't think that the Seminoles can pull it out for ol' Bobby. This should be a decent game, but will probably end Bowden's career on a sour note.

Final Score: 33-30 West Virginia

Capital One Bowl
Penn State vs. LSU

In possibly the most anticipated non-BCS matchup, two strong defensive teams will face off in Florida. As has been the story in other games thus far featuring solid defensive teams, ball control will be key. I see Penn State being able to make just enough big plays to pull out a win here.

Final Score: 24-21 Penn State

Rose Bowl
Ohio State vs. Oregon

Many people think that this game will come down to who plays the quarterback position better; Jeremiah Masoli or Terrelle Pryor. I think that if Ohio State's defense comes after Masoli and doesn't hang back in coverage to let him have all day to make decisions, then Ohio State's superior athleticism will prevail.

Final Score: 28-17 Ohio State

Allstate Sugar Bowl
Cincinnati vs. Florida

Personally, I will be sad to see Tim Tebow go. I have never seen anyone play the game as hard as he does, and I have a great amount of respect for individuals who give 100 percent all game like he does. I don't think this game will be all that close, as I am not overly impressed with Cincinnati's defense. On the flip side, Cincinnati has not faced a defense like Florida's this season, either.

Final Score: 41-17 Florida

I decided not to post how many points I had in my College Bowl Mania game today. Tomorrow, I will update you all on my overall record, and probably analyze my chances of winning my group. Again, Happy New Year to everyone; I am really looking forward to what I think will be a great year.

Thanks Again Pac-10

Well, yesterday I was humbled. Bowling Green and Idaho put on an offensive show as I predicted, and it turned out to be the best finish in a bowl game this year. With that being said, I wasn't too upset that Idaho won and cost me 18 points in the College Bowl Mania game. As for the Holiday Bowl, not only was it a terrible game to watch, but Nebraska made the Pac-10 look like they had their tails between their legs while trembling in fear. Do you realize that Arizona had a shot to play in the Rose Bowl, and they even took eventual Pac-10 champion Oregon to double OT?

Today marks the first day in which more than three bowl games are being played. In fact, five are being played. Here are my picks for the December 31st bowl games.

Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl
Air Force vs. Houston

I want Air Force to be competitive in this game, but I think after the first half this game may get out of hand. Houston QB Case Keenum could be the best quarterback in the nation (sorry Colt McCoy). It isn't a question of whether Houston will put up a lot of points in this game; it's how many points. Air Force has the top ranked pass defense in the Mountain West Conference, but they haven't faced anyone like Keenum. Like I said, this one could be interesting for a half, but I think Houston will take control in the second half. I have Houston for 25 points in the College Bowl Mania game, and I'm pretty confident in that pick.

Final Score: 38-24 Houston

Brut Sun Bowl
Oklahoma vs. Stanford

I am very glad that I didn't pick Stanford in this game. I like Toby Gerhart and his bruising running style, but I have no faith in the Pac-10. Oklahoma is not as bad as their record would indicate. They shut out a solid Oklahoma State team in their season finale, and Landry Jones has started to become more comfortable running the offense. This one may be a good game, but I see Oklahoma driving the ball down the field when it matters most. I have Oklahoma for 21 points in the College Bowl Mania game, and this could really help me move up in the rankings.

Final Score: 30-21 Oklahoma

Texas Bowl
Navy vs. Missouri

I like the Midshipmen for the upset in this one. Navy is very sound defensively, and runs a very tricky triple option offense. If they can control the ball and take minutes off the clock with long offensive drives that wear down the Tiger defense, then they can come away with a win. I saw them play Ohio State early in the season, and was very impressed with this team. Another kicker: Navy is disciplined, and will not commit many turnovers or penalties. I have Navy for 11 points in the College Bowl Mania game.

Final Score: 17-13 Navy

Insight Bowl
Minnesota vs. Iowa State

When I look at this matchup, I think it's going to be one of the worst games of the bowl season. Of course, I thought that about the Humanitarian Bowl, and look how that one turned out. I like Minnesota in this one, simply because of their wideout Eric Decker. He is an impact receiver who can pull down almost anything QB Adam Weber throws up. Plus, he's white, and how many times do you see a white guy with these kinds of skills? I don't really plan on watching this one, and I'm sure many people don't either (how many people who don't have DirecTV even have the NFL Network?), so I'll just be hoping for some Decker play to make Top 10 on Sportscenter. I have Minnesota for 10 points in the College Bowl Mania game.

Final Score: 31-24 Minnesota

Chik-fil-A Bowl
Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee

This game has the potential to be a great one to watch. Unfortunately, the bowl people have never seemed to realize that a game featuring middle-of-the-pack SEC and ACC teams is not the best way to attract attention four hours before the ball drops for New Years. What's a better way, you ask? Um, there is none. I guess all those "Eat more Chicken" commercials with that cow are kind of funny, so it's a trade off. Both teams are solid defensively, so I think that Virginia Tech has an offense more capable of putting up points. This one should be close, and it Lane Kiffin did a nice job turning this program around. I have Virginia Tech for 17 points in the College Bowl Mania game, and contrary to my earlier comments, I will be watching this game.

Final Score: 30-17 Virginia Tech

Hopefully everyone has a happy New Year and a safe New Year's Eve. 2009 has been a great year for me personally, but it's time to turn over the calendar to 2010. Maybe next year my blog will actually get reads!

Big News; Good Day

It's official; Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach has been fired. If you haven't heard the story about Leach, you are probably living under a rock. This story has totally shifted the focus from Urban Meyer to Leach and the Texas Tech football program, and for the next few days the media will continue to analyze and discuss this story just as they did the Meyer situation. I saw a phone interview on ESPN yesterday with Leach's attorney Ted Liggett, and I'm not saying Leach is guilty or not guilty, but Liggett sounded like he was BSing the whole thing. I know that attorneys are said to be liars, but if a seventeen year old can see right through your words, you're probably not doing your job very well. I expect to see Leach fight to continue coaching, but it is unlikely that he will be wearing the headset on Saturday. This throws a major curveball for my Alamo Bowl pick.

Speaking of bowl games, I had a very good day picking the games for December 29th. UCLA survived, and Wisconsin was able to control the ball and pull out a win in the Champs Sports Bowl. I'm now 8-5 overall, and am becoming more optimistic about my chances to win my group in the College Bowl Mania game.

Today's games could be just as exciting as yesterday's. Here are my picks for the December 30th bowl games.

Roady's Humanitarian Bowl
Bowling Green vs. Idaho

In possibly my favorite bowl game for two reasons (the Blue Field and the sponsor; is it a barbeque grill or a truck stop?) the MAC and WAC will face off, trying to capture their first bowl win of the season for their respective conferences. So far, both conferences are 0-2 in the bowl season. With this being said, I'm going to have to go with Bowling Green. Idaho suffered a 70-45 loss to Nevada, a team who only scored 10 points in the Hawaii Bowl. Falcons QB Tyler Sheehan is first in the MAC with 3664 passing yards, so he should be able to pass all over the Vandal defense. As long as the cold weather and blue field don't get to Bowling Green, they should come away with a win.

Final Score: 44-27 Bowling Green

Pacific Life Holiday Bowl
Arizona vs. Nebraska

The Holiday Bowl is historically a game that features two teams with high octane offenses capable of scoring in the high 30s to 40s. This game will probably not feature such offensive fireworks, as Nebraska comes in with one of the best defenses in the nation, giving up just 11.2 PPG (good for 2nd best, behind Alabama). Arizona comes in with a defense giving up only 315.8 yards per game, which is second best in the Pac-10. Like yesterday's Champs Sports Bowl, this game should come down to who can control the ball on offense. I'm going out on a limb and saying Arizona will upset the Cornhuskers, who have trouble scoring against anyone. Here's a thought for Bo Pelini: hire Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator, and then Nebraska would have a powerful offense and defense. That, my friends, is smart thinking.

Final Score: 24-20 Arizona

I have Bowling Green for 18 points, and Arizona for 5 points in the College Bowl Mania game. Hopefully I can continue my winning streak and go into New Years Eve happy. Five bowl games are being played tomorrow; it should be a joy getting up and writing about all of them before noon.

Climbing The Ranks

I've managed to put together a considerable winning streak, with a 4-0 record picking the last four bowl games. The only problem is, almost everyone else playing the College Bowl Mania game had the exact same picks, so I'm slowly rising in the overall rankings. Today could be the day that I finally make a significant jump in the rankings.

I don't have too much to say about last night's game, because I was unable to watch it. However, I think it's safe to say that the Aggie defense was non-existent. If I'm off the mark there, then someone please let me know how Georgia managed to score 44 points.

After two days with only one bowl game, we begin a string of days in which multiple games are being played. Here are my picks for the December 29th bowl games.

EagleBank Bowl
UCLA vs. Temple

At first glance, common sense tells you that this shouldn't be much of a game. However, not only does UCLA have to travel across the country to play this game (it is in Washington, D.C.), but they only have three conference wins. Two of those wins happen to be against the bottom two teams in the Pac-10 (Washington St. and Arizona St.) while the third was against Washington, who was 7th in the Pac-10. In previous entries I've voiced my opinion of the Pac-10, and UCLA doesn't do anything to change that opinion. Fortunately for the Bruins, they don't have to play a MWC foe. Temple, disregarding their record, just isn't as strong a team as some of the other teams the Pac-10 have had to face. This game should be closer than many people predict, but it may still be a boring one. I have 26 points on UCLA in the College Bowl Mania game, but I'm not that confident in them.

Final Score: 27-17 UCLA

Champs Sports Bowl
Miami (FL) vs. Wisconsin

Unlike the first game today, this one has the potential to be a great game to watch. Miami is led by QB Jacory Harris on offense, and he is a solid quarterback who can take his team down the field quickly if he needs to. Wisconsin is more run-oriented, and will rely on HB John Clay to pound the ball down the field. In games featuring two good teams, as this one does, ball control is usually the deciding factor. If Wisconsin can control the ball and grind out the clock, then they can come away with the win. However, if Miami gets out to a fast start and gets up early, then it will be hard for the slower moving Badger offense to keep up. I have Wisconsin for 3 points in the College Bowl Mania game, and I'm looking forward to watching this one. It has the potential to be the best game we've seen in the bowl season so far.

Final Score: 28-24 Wisconsin

I'm Tired Of Hearing About Urban Meyer

I know that I said shoot me an e-mail if you wanted to hear my opinion about the Urban Meyer situation, but now I'm starting to get sick of it. The fact is, the guy will be back in 2011, if not next year. It's not that big of a deal. Even if he isn't the "head coach" in name next season, he will still be involved with the program. I see him taking on a role similar to the one Bill Parcels has in Miami; still making decisions, but not actually wearing the headset on Saturdays.

With that aside, I want to shift the focus back to bowl games. Last night was a little more defensive oriented than I had envisioned, but nonetheless Clemson pulled out a win (thanks to a fumble by Kentucky when they were driving down the field in the 4th quarter).

Today, however, should be a completely different story. Here are my picks for the December 28th bowl games.

AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl
Georgia vs. Texas A&M

I'm not sure if defense is a word that has been used much in College Station this season. The Aggies are last in points allowed in the Big 12, giving up almost 33 PPG. Georgia isn't much better, giving up 26.4 PPG, good for 10th best in the SEC. With that being said, this game should be a shootout reminiscent of the game Texas A&M played against Texas on Thanksgiving weekend. If Aggie QB Jerrod Johnson can move the ball effectively against the Bulldogs defense, then Texas A&M could upset Georgia. However, with losses like 47-19 to Arkansas and 65-10 to Oklahoma, I just don't know if they can stop Georgia, who is no slouch on offense either. I have Georgia for 24 points in the College Bowl Mania game, which may have been a little high, but I'm confident in the Bulldogs. Whomever the winner is, it should be close for the entire game.

Final Score: 42-38 Georgia

I Did This So My Title Wouldn't Contain The Word "Finally"....That Doesn't Count

If you don't get the joke, just take a look at the titles of some of my previous entries. Repetition is a terrible thing in the journalistic world.

Yesterday was the first day that I actually had a winning record picking the bowl games. Unfortunately, on this blog I was 1-2, because I decided to go against Pitt when I had them winning in my College Bowl Mania picks. Another good thing about yesterday's games is that they were actually worth watching. I think this is partly due to the fact that the games are now featuring teams the average fan knows about (sports-types, of course, know who UCF is, but the average person not from Florida probably just thinks they misspelled the acronym for United Dairy Farmers). At any rate, this is good for me, as I have had terrible luck when picking teams that are supposedly gauranteed to win (most odds makers had Nevada as 15 point favorites over SMU).

There is only one game for December 27th, so here is my pick.

Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl
Kentucky vs. Clemson

Lots of Clemson fans complained about being sent to Nashville, due to the fact that they finished higher in the ACC than Florida State, who received a bid to the Gator Bowl. Message to Clemson fans: Quit complaining. Unlike FSU, your team actually has a chance to win their game. C.J. Spiller is possibly the most dominate player in college football when he is on the field (other than Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh), and has the ability to score every time he touches the ball. I expect at least two touchdowns on the ground by Spiller. The key in this game however, is Clemson's defense. It is clear that they can score the ball at will, but stopping Kentucky QB Mike Hartline will be the difference in this game. If Clemson can disrupt the Kentucky passing attack, then they will leave Nashville a winner. I have Clemson for 28 points in the College Bowl Mania game, so I will be very pleased if they can deliver.

Final Score: 38-24 Clemson

Only one bowl game is being played today and tomorrow. So, if you would like me to comment on another topic in sports, such as Urban Meyer's decision to take a leave of absence at Florida, then give me a shout at aroundthecornsportsblog@gmail.com .

Will We Finally Get Some Close Games?

Let's just say that I didn't get any early Christmas gifts. After SMU's drubbing of Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve, I was left at 2-4 in the College Bowl Mania game and had just lost 34 points on my most sure bet for a win.

Today, all I'm asking for is that the games are close. Since the kickoff of the bowl season, there haven't really been any competitive games. However, I think that our luck could change, as today's matchups look very interesting. Here are my picks for the December 27th bowl games.

Little Caesars Pizza Bowl
Marshall vs. Ohio

If I had predicted this game a few days earlier, I likely would have said that Ohio was the clear favorite and that this may not be much of a game. I'm glad I didn't say that. I believe that Ohio still has a slight advantage due to the fact that Marshall will be coached by interim coach Rick Minter, who is normally the defensive coordinator. However, Ohio has never won a bowl game before (they've only been to four). The key in this game will be whether Marshall's defense can contain Ohio QB Theo Scott. I've got Ohio for 22 points in the College Bowl Mania game, but I'm not as confident as my pick would indicate.

Final Score: 34-28 Ohio

Meineke Car Care Bowl
Pittsburgh vs. North Carolina

This may be the most interesting matchup so far this bowl season. This is another game featuring a high octane offense (Pittsburgh) versus a lock-down defense (North Carolina). Both teams can also be one of the best in the nation when they bring their A-game; however, both are also streaky. Two things to note in this game: North Carolina is essentially playing a home game (it's in Charlotte), and Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt apparently said that getting over a loss like the one Pitt suffered against Cincinnati in the season finale will take some time. I have Pittsburgh for 16 points in the College Bowl Mania game, but I actually think North Carolina will pull out a squeaker.

Final Score: 27-24 North Carolina

Emerald Bowl
Boston College vs. Southern California

The biggest question in this game is "Will USC get up to play in a seemingly meaningless game?". This is the first time that USC will be playing in a non-BCS game since 2001. I think the answer is not entirely, but the superior athletes on the Trojans will still be able to pull out a win. The key for BC is to get after USC QB Matt Barkley. Every team that has beaten USC thus far this year has had to do that. If BC sits back, then Barkley will look like a seasoned upperclassmen and the game may get out of hand.

If I were USC coach Pete Carroll, I would remind my team of Jake Olsen. Those of you who watch College Gameday (or Sportscenter, as this story was on this morning) know about Jake, a 12 year old boy who lost his eyesight whom the Trojans have adopted as their number one fan. In my opinion, the Trojans are in dire need of a reason to play hard, and Jake could be their reason.

I have USC for 27 points in the College Bowl Mania game, but if Boston College wants it enough, they have the ability to win this game.

Final Score: 33-24 USC

Finally...

As I said yesterday, last night's game was the first time in this bowl season that I felt confident with my pick. Once again, the Pac-10 did not impress me, and Cal bolstered my argument that the Pac-10 is full of hapless defenses that make their offenses look dominating. I was very satisfied with the score of the game as well, as I was only one point off of each team's final tally.

Today, I feel even better about my pick. Here it is, my preview of the bowl games for December 24th.

Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
Nevada vs. Southern Methodist

I don't see this as being much of a game due to the fact that Nevada's QB Colin Kaepernick is a duel threat unlike anything SMU has seen all season. However, if the bowl games that have already been played are any indication, then this one could be a shocker as well. Something to keep in mind is that this is somewhat of a homecoming for SMU coach June Jones, who coached the University of Hawaii until bolting for SMU in 2007 after Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan graduated. Also, this is SMU's first bowl game in 25 years, so they should be ready to play.

Regardless of the winner, this should be a high scoring game and a fun one to watch if it stays even moderately close. I have 34 points on Nevada in the College Bowl Mania game, so I can only hope that Kaepernick proves me right.

Final Score: 45-24 Nevada

Tomorrow there are no bowl games, so I probably won't post a new entry (I'm not into the NBA on Christmas Day thing...). So, I'd like to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas.

I'm Back....I Think

Well, let me start by saying I didn't think that this would be only my second blog ever. Like I said in my last blog, I had hoped to post at least once every few days starting back around the 4th of July. However, things got busy, I had to start training for cross country, and so forth. Anyway, I'm back, and this time I can say pretty confidently that I'll have at least a few posts in the next two weeks.

I'll be honest; I had planned on starting again before the beginning of the college bowl season so that I could give my take on each bowl game. Obviously, that didn't happen, and quite frankly, it's probably for the better. I'm not sure how many of you signed up to play the College Bowl Mania game on ESPN.com, but it has been a disaster for me so far. A 1-3 record, combined with the fact that I've lost about 70 points so far (you won't get any of this unless you play) has me already rooting against teams so that I don't fall even further behind.

With that being said, I think that my luck could turn around tonight. So that is why I'm going to start my blogging again with a preview of the bowl games for December 23rd. I can't guarantee anything, but I will try my best to blog every day for the next two weeks or so in order to share my expertise of picking these fine college bowl games. Maybe I can even attract a few readers if my picks are good!

San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl
Utah vs. California

After watching the Pac-10 get destroyed last night by the MWC, I am glad that I picked Utah for 19 points in the College Bowl Mania game. Although the wind will probably not be a factor in this game like it was last night in Las Vegas (check out some of the punts by Oregon State kicker Johnny Hecker), I believe that the Utah defense can hold the Cal offense. I have not been impressed with the Pac-10 so far in this bowl season, and I'm beginning to wonder if any of their teams really have dominating offenses, or if there are just no good defenses in that league.

Final Score: 38-28 Utah

Well, the game is on now. Tomorrow I'll try to have my pick posted before the game starts. Tune in to ESPN; let's hope it's a good one.
